Automotive window films

Question: [1]
Is it allowed to agglutinate the front side windows of the car with auto-glass films?

Please see herefore the land-specific permission terms. Valid for the BRD: The basic principle is the ECE regulation 43 - valid in case of a testing (invidual case needed for every vehicle)- of the light transmission of min. 70% (auto-glass incl. auto-glass film) will not be undershooted. For your information: The serially heat-protection shield auto-glasses do have a light transmission value (without auto-glass film) of min. 70%.Further on, special and very expensive abrasion-tests, which are made at the auto-glasses are necessary.
The windscreen of a car must have a light transmission not less than 75%.

Question: [1.1]
Testing of car glass films for the additional mounting on car windows, on places that are not of any importance for the drivers sight.(instead of the windscreen).

. Annex 3 of the ECE regulation 43 (radiation durability, weathering, higher temperature)
. Annex 5 of the ECE regulation 43 (rupture structure, bowl fall test, light transmission)
. Annex 9 of the ECE regulation 43 (abrasion test, moisture durability, temperature changing durability, burning behaviour, chemical durability)
. T.A. Nr. 29 article 3.8 of the concept for the enlargement (behaviour while impulsive impinging of blunt huge bodies, reflection degree, burning behaviour, rupture structure)
. Optical features (according to T.A. Nr. 29 article 3.6.8.3)

Question: [2]
Which size of sunvisor is allowed to put on the front-shield?

In accordance with the traffic-sheet-communique of 1986, it is allowed to use sunvisors, after the following criterias are performed:
I) The total area of all mounted stickers on the auto-glass, must not trespass 0,1 square meters.
II) It must not be agglutinated more than 1/4 of the auto-glass surface area.
III) The auto-glass sourrounding must be free from stickers.
IV) It must be warranted (after §35b passage 2 phrase 1) that the free visibility exists.

For fitments in countries outside the Federal Republic of Germany, the national homolagation regulations apply.

Question: [3]
Is it necessary to cut out of the auto-glass film existing third stop lights?

On cars, which are equipped with a serially third stop light (ex factory), they must be cut out of the auto-glass film.

Question: [4]
Why does the Silver Reflex Film not reflect as shown on the packing or in the catalogue?

The reflection effect depends on the angle of the solar radiation, the color of the auto-glasses and the color of the car interior decoration.

Question: [5]
Is it possible to remove the glue left-overs after taking off the auto-glass films from the auto-glass?

Glue left-overs can be removed trouble-free with the FOLIATEC remover (Item No. 22501).

Question: [6]
Is it possible to remove the auto-glass film trouble-free from the auto-glass?

Through warming the auto-glass film with a hair-dryer (hot air pistol) the removal of the auto-glass film is eased. It should be avoided to take off the auto-glass film fitfully - the heat-wires or the antenna-wires, which are mounted on the auto-glass, could be damaged.

Question: [7]
Where are auto-glass films allowed to be mounted?

Auto-glass films should be mounted only on the interior side of the windows (only real glass). The material acrylic glass can be corroded through the glue of the auto-glass film.

Question: [8]
Is it possible, that metallic auto-glass films cause malfunctions (glass-antennas,...)?

Malfunctions can appear, when auto-glass antennas /GPS radios are mounted on a auto-glass, which is coated with metallic auto-glass films (Midnight Reflex, Color Reflex,..).

Question: [9]
Additional tinting of car glasses with glass lacquer or powder coating (that create a kind of film on the car glass), are not licensable and assigned to the of the approval process of the glass panel.

The design certification for the safety glass expires immediately if such procedures happen. Also the operating license of the vehicle expires (KBA) - according to § 19 Abs. 3 Nr. 4 of the STVZO (Road Traffic Licening Regulations)

Glass panels are design certification obligatory, they need a valid design certification.
Single certifications, documents of compliance or other authority approvals can not clear a violation against the design certification.

According to a directive from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, non-film tinted windows (with glass lacquer or powder coating ) with general design certification are permitted (equal status – Auto glass films) During the licensing procedure (from the B-pillar onwards) certain conditions must be fulfilled (i.e. removing windows – special marks etc.).
The same requirements apply to the front side windows as to other areas with Autoglass film (increased scratch resistance etc.).

Regarding TÜV approval: it is clearly stated that the TÜV or other regulatory bodies are not authorized to approve “parts with design certification” or entry into the car documentation.

Question: [10]
What is essential to bear in mind when applying the film?

Low levels of tiny dust particles under the film in the millimetre range are unavoidable when there is a higher dust concentration in the air (particularly during the spring and summer). If, shortly after application, the adhesive is not yet completely affixed, or the printed area is too thick around the edge of the window, it may be that the film does not adhere sufficiently in the printed area. In the event of this, press around the edge of the screen print firmly using your thumb around one week later. Condensation and pools of water visible shortly after application are part of the drying process. Depending on humidity and temperature, these will disappear with the first couple of weeks. Do not roll down windows until they are completely dry, otherwise the rubber lip along the edge of the window and any remaining moisture can cause damage or bubbles to form. Only use heated windscreens once they are completely dry. During application or when cutting the film, the following must also be taken into account: to avoid scratching the windows, it is important to hold and guide the cutter correctly. The cutter should be held at an angle of 45° to the film. It is imperative for the cutter blade to be broken off at regular intervals so you are always working with a razor-sharp blade. This ensures that the film has completely clean edges and there is no roughness.
